The monthly salary: security and illusion

Ah…the monthly salary. Probably the biggest hurdle on the way to creative and personal freedom (for some).

The sweet sweet illusion of safety and security.

The trappiest of traps. 

It took me about a year to overcome the drama of not getting a monthly salary when I started on my entrepreneurial journey.

At first, it was exciting. A new beginning.

Then there was the worry. Followed by despair.

Then the realisation that the only way forward was to manage my mind.

I invested heavily in myself. In amazing coaches, communities, courses. I learned a new money mindset. I learned to see myself completely differently, with complete love. 

I started looking for evidence of abundance, not of scarcity.

I looked at how I was growing, not how my savings were dwindling.

I reminded myself that savings are exactly for this: for the freedom of growing, learning, transforming, creating something new.

And committed to doing exactly that: growing, learning, transforming, creating something new.

Being of service to others. Cultivating faith. Growing my self-concept as a successful coach and entrepreneur.

Looking at my bank balance as a barometer for taking action, not questioning my self-worth.

It was a painful process. Really painful. Although my story is one of privilege (I am a white woman, highly educated and I had savings), my background was one of real poverty and that had conditioned me heavily. No amount of money and savings were ever enough. 

Yes, it was a painful process, but today I really understand what freedom is: it’s not the freedom of buying whatever I want, whenever I want. It’s the freedom of doing something I love, creating money from doing that, whenever I want. As much as I want. Trusting myself to be able to do that even if I were to lose everything or start from scratch again.

This is why a monthly salary only gives you the illusion of security: you can lose it at any moment and you’ll always need to find someone else to offer you that sense of security.

But when you finesse the skill of developing your self-concept and creating money by yourself, unconstrained by arbitrary corporate benchmarks, you are unstoppable.

It’s a process and it will take time. But you won’t regret doing it. And it will take a lot less time than you think. 

This is for you, budding entrepreneurs. It’s a process. Keep going.

It’s also for you, exquisite, bright employees, loving your jobs. You are doing amazing things in the world and we thank you. Keep going.
